Gender-balanced subfields in computer science (CS) may seem positive for increasing women’s presence in CS. However, these subfields are often the only areas with high representations of women, leaving many other, often more lucrative, CS areas dominated by men. Results suggest that academic gatekeepers steer women away from predominately male subfields to increase women’s belonging in CS.
