We examined how electing an out-group leader to a superordinate leadership position affected schism processes within the context of the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Results from two studies suggest that electing an out-group leader leads to the perception that the superordinate identity has changed and violated its core values, which can lead to subgroup schism support.
