In an experiment manipulating the number of ecological goods that a family was said to consume, we find evidence that people are insensitive to quantity when judging a consumer’s total environmental impact. Results suggest that participants view even the overconsumption of “green” goods as environmentally friendly behavior, a bias that may undermine sustainability goals.
