Charitable giving involves balancing the utility of helping others with the disutility of paying. Four studies (N=2335) show that a delay period between committing to donate and paying for the donation can increase donations. Study 1a-b demonstrates this effect. Study 2 shows the effect applies to time donations. Study 3 shows that delay increases donations only when people feel pain of payment.
