In four studies, we used a novel economic game to demonstrate how third-party observers (3PO) pursued moral motives in the context of social goals in a costly intergroup conflict. In various conflict situations, moral motives to harm the perpetrator or support the victim were shaped by ingroup biases. We highlight the interaction of social-moral motives underlying 3PO participation in conflicts.
