Two studies examined people’s implicit theories of authenticity: what people believe authenticity is and why they think they feel inauthentic. Study 1 identified six primary reasons that people feel inauthentic. Study 2 showed that challenging these reasons influenced people’s authenticity beliefs and affected their judgments of and emotional reactions to past “inauthentic” behaviors.
