We propose a theory in which people use projection for both similar targets and dissimilar targets with opposite beliefs. We assessed participants’ self-knowledge, created targets of different levels of similarity, and measured RTs and the likelihood that perceivers made the same judgment about the targets and self in a social inference task. The model accurately predicts both measures.
