Mutual trust promotes cooperation. However, it does not fully explain why some people exploit others even when they trust others. We hypothesized that trust would work as a key to cooperation only when people are inclined to pursue cooperation with others. We conducted a public goods game and found that trust promoted cooperation only among those who scored high in harmony seeking.
