Path analyses using self-report data from 1429 ethnically-diverse university students found 3 types of empathy (empathic concern, responsive joy, responsive distress) and perceived support and psychological control from mothers and fathers were related to depressive symptoms, happiness, and anger. The parenting variables were directly and indirectly related to adjustment through empathy.
