Across three studies, we investigated whether group homogeneity triggers dehumanizing judgments. Participants made judgments about the mental faculties of two alien species that differed from one another only in heterogeneity. In each study, the more homogeneous species, either semantically (Studies 1 and 2) or perceptually (Study 3), was judged to be less humanlike than the more heterogeneous species.
