Using a new measure of perceived fitness interdependence, we found that the measure predicts willingness to help better than (i) genetic relatedness, and (ii) other existing measures of interdependence. Social psychological and evolutionary approaches complement one another, helping bridge the gap between perceptions of interdependence and the evolutionary factors that have shaped it.
